🌍 Vietnam's Two-Season System

Forget spring, summer, autumn, winter. Southern Vietnam runs on two seasons only — and once you know the pattern, you can dress, plan, and talk about the weather like a local.

Dry Season
Mùa Khô
☀️ November → April
Clear skies, lower humidity, cooler evenings. The most popular time for travelers. Saigon sits around 28–34°C. Almost no rain in the south.
Rainy Season
Mùa Mưa
🌧️ May → October
Heavy afternoon downpours — usually 1–2 hours then it clears. Mornings stay sunny. Lush and green. Temperatures actually feel cooler after rain.
💡 Rainy season myth: Most travelers avoid the rainy season — which means fewer tourists, cheaper hotels, and the same sunny mornings. The rain hits hard around 3–5pm and clears by evening. Locals barely break stride.
📅 Month-by-Month — South Vietnam (Saigon)
MonthSeasonWhat to Expect
Tháng 1–2Dry ☀️Coolest, least humid. Tet holiday in Jan/Feb — very busy
Tháng 3–4Dry ☀️Getting hotter — hottest months of the year, up to 38°C
Tháng 5Transition 🌦️First rains arrive — humidity spikes, afternoon showers begin
Tháng 6–8Rainy 🌧️Peak rainy season — daily afternoon downpours, lush scenery
Tháng 9–10Rainy 🌧️Heaviest rainfall — flooding possible in low-lying areas
Tháng 11–12Dry ☀️Rain easing off — excellent conditions, best travel weather
💡 Tháng means "month." Vietnamese months are just numbers — Tháng 1 (January), Tháng 2 (February), all the way to Tháng 12 (December). No names to memorize.

🗺️ Three Very Different Climates

Vietnam is 1,650km long — roughly London to Rome. The climate in Hanoi and Saigon can feel like different countries. The Central region adds a third pattern entirely.

RegionSeason PatternTemperature RangeStandout Feature
Miền Nam 🏙️
Southern Vietnam (Saigon)
2 seasons 26–38°C year-round Hot always. Afternoon rain May–Oct. Zero winter.
Miền Trung 🌊
Central Vietnam (Đà Nẵng, Hội An, Huế)
Reversed seasons 18–36°C Dry when south is wet. Typhoon season Oct–Dec.
Miền Bắc 🏛️
Northern Vietnam (Hanoi)
4 seasons 10–38°C Real winter Jan–Feb. Humid spring. Hot summers.
Tây Nguyên ⛰️
Central Highlands (Đà Lạt)
Cool year-round 15–24°C "City of eternal spring." Mist, flowers, pine trees.
💡 The reversed rainy season trick: When it's dry in Saigon (November–April), it's rainy in Central Vietnam. This is why Hội An floods in October–November — when Saigon is having its best weather. Always check the specific region before you travel.
❄️ Hanoi's Four Seasons

Unlike Saigon, Hanoi has recognizable seasons — including a genuine cool winter. Temperatures can drop to 10°C in January, cold enough that locals bundle up in heavy coats.

SeasonVietnameseMonthsWhat It's Like
SpringMùa xuânFeb–AprWarm and misty. Drizzle (mưa phùn). Cherry blossoms.
SummerMùa hèMay–AugHot and humid. Thunderstorms. Up to 38°C.
AutumnMùa thuSep–NovMild and pleasant. The best season in Hanoi.
WinterMùa đôngDec–JanCool to cold. 10–18°C. Bring a real jacket.
💡 Four season vocab: Xuân (spring) · Hè (summer) · Thu (autumn) · Đông (winter). These words appear in poetry, songs, and place names — worth knowing even if you're only visiting the south.

💬 Talking About Weather — Everyday Phrases
VietnamesePronunciationMeaning
Hôm nay trời nóng quá!hom nay choy nawng kwahIt's so hot today!

Trời có gió không?choy koh yoh khomIs it windy?
Mang theo ô đi — trời sắp mưa.mahng theh-oh oh deeBring an umbrella — it's about to rain.
💡 "Trời ơi!" (literally "Oh heavens!") is the most common Vietnamese exclamation — used for surprise, heat, frustration, delight, and everything in between. Say it when Saigon's afternoon rain hits you unprepared and you'll fit right in.
🕐 Tense in Weather Sentences

Vietnamese doesn't change the verb — you add a time word or marker to show when something happens.

Past: Hôm qua trời mưa. — It rained yesterday.
Present: Trời đang mưa. — It's raining right now.
Near future: Trời sắp mưa rồi. — It's about to rain.
Future: Ngày mai trời sẽ mưa. — It will rain tomorrow.
Habitual: Ở đây hay mưa vào buổi chiều. — It often rains here in the afternoon.
💡 The verb "mưa" (rain) never changes. Only the time marker changes. This is one of the most freeing things about Vietnamese grammar — learn the markers, not conjugations.

✈️ Best Time to Visit — By Region

There is no single "best time to visit Vietnam" — it depends entirely on where you're going. Here's the honest breakdown.

Saigon / Mekong Delta
✅ Best: Nov → Apr
⚠️ Avoid: Sep–Oct (peak flooding)
Dry season = clear skies, lower humidity. Rainy season mornings are still fine — just plan around afternoon showers.
Hội An / Đà Nẵng
✅ Best: Feb → Aug
⚠️ Avoid: Oct–Dec (typhoon + flood season)
Central Vietnam has reversed seasons. When Saigon is dry and pleasant, Hội An can be underwater.
Hanoi / Sapa
✅ Best: Oct → Apr
⚠️ Avoid: Jun–Aug (hot, humid, rainy)
Autumn (Oct–Nov) is stunning in Hanoi. Sapa in December can have frost — pack accordingly.
Đà Lạt
✅ Best: Nov → Apr
⚠️ Avoid: Jul–Aug (rainiest months)
Cool year-round. Always bring a light jacket — even in "summer." The flower festival is usually in December.
Phú Quốc
✅ Best: Nov → Apr
⚠️ Avoid: May–Oct (rough seas, rain)
Best beach weather aligns with Saigon's dry season. Monsoon months bring strong winds and murky water.
Hà Giang / North
✅ Best: Oct (buckwheat flowers)
⚠️ Avoid: Jun–Aug (landslides)
The famous tam giác mạch (buckwheat) flowers bloom October–November. Worth timing your trip around this.
🎒 What to Pack — Weather Edition
ItemVietnameseWhen You Need It
UmbrellaÔ / dùRainy season essential — street vendors sell them everywhere
Rain ponchoÁo mưaBetter than umbrella on a motorbike — buy locally for ~30,000₫
Light jacketÁo khoác nhẹAir-con in restaurants and buses is arctic — always carry one
Warm jacketÁo ấmHanoi winter, Sapa, Đà Lạt evenings
SunscreenKem chống nắngUV is intense year-round — especially on beaches and motorbikes
Flip flopsDépRainy season — your good shoes will get soaked on flooded streets
💡 The air-con trap: Vietnam's outdoor heat is extreme — so restaurants, buses, and shopping malls crank the air-con to near-freezing. Always carry a light layer even in 38°C heat. The locals do.
